Medical Acupuncture

What is acupuncture?
Traditional Chinese Acupuncture (TCA) is a treatment that’s been used for thousands of years in the Far East. It’s based on the belief that an energy called Chi becomes blocked. Very fine sterile needles are inserted into specific sites called meridians to unblock this energy and to help the body function better.

At Optimise, I use Western medical acupuncture which is derived directly from this traditional form.  It doesn’t have to be used on its own as an alternative therapy; it’s evolved to work within the mainstream western approach to medical care.

What are the benefits of acupuncture?
Acupuncture can provide significant health benefits including:

  • a reduction in the amount of medication you need
  • relief of symptoms
  • reduction in pain levels
  • relaxation, revitalisation and an improvement in your overall wellbeing

Acupuncture has been studied extensively in the West in recent years. It’s believed it has central effects on the endorphin levels in the brain and peripheral effects by blocking the pain pathway. It can improve local immunity, reduce inflammation and stimulate greater blood flow to the areas treated.

How can acupuncture help you?
Acupuncture can help with a huge range of conditions including:

  • Musculoskeletal conditions including neck, shoulder and back pain (acupuncture is now recommended by NICE as a treatment option for lower back pain)
  • Skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea
  • Asthma
  • Infertility and many gynaecological conditions
  • Bowel conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome
  • Hayfever, sinusitis, rhinitis and tinnitus
  • Trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain and Bell’s palsy
  • Headaches and  migraines
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Arthritis
  • Detoxification and support with alcohol and smoking  issues
  • Weight loss

What will an acupuncture session be like?
I’ll start off by assessing your health situation. If I think a different approach or therapy option would provide a better solution, I’ll advise you and we’ll discuss your options going forward.

If we go ahead, each session will take around 45 minutes (1 hour on the first occasion). Most conditions need around 4 to 6 weekly sessions to get the best outcome. During each session, the needles will usually be left in for 20 minutes. I’ll use moxa (heat) and/or electrical acupuncture to enhance the therapy as needed.

If you have any problems with the therapy we’ll stop immediately and have a chat about what the best next step should be.

Sue is a great acupuncturist but more than that, treatment actually feels like a relaxing therapy.

I had a course of acupuncture with Sue for a serious knee condition. I found the treatments to be very effective in relaxing my knee and providing pain relief. And Sue is so lovely too. A strange thing to say about someone sticking needles in you!
